But before I did that, I was an applicant myself, and I went through the same long learning curve that you’re probably going through right now.

In my case, I was in semi-retirement and was only interested in working temporary contracts. That meant going through the application/hiring process over and over again. In the beginning, it was a frustrating experience. 

I was a great candidate, but I couldn’t seem to get noticed. So I knew I had to figure out how the whole “system” worked. And that’s just what I did—I devoted my time to figuring out, bit by bit, just what it takes to get hired by the Government. 

But now I also have inside experience and knowledge. That’s because some of the government job competitions I won were in HR, and I began working as an applicant screener and interviewer. That’s when my knowledge of the hiring process kicked into high gear.

Over and over again, I’ve seen what applicants do right, and I’ve seen what they do wrong. I’ve also seen how little most of them understand about how the government hiring process actually works. 

And that’s an important thing to know, because applying to the government is very different from applying to other jobs. There are many steps, each with specific requirements, and if you don’t understand how it all works, you have very little chance of getting hired.
